The Spaniards first saw Redwood trees near Santa Cruz. The church was stoutly built of stone and Adobe, but the earthquakes of 1840 and 1857 completely destroyed it. A reproduction of the church, on a smaller scale, was made from a drawing by Trousset in 1854.
