After two fires caused by the tule and grass roofs, the Padres of this mission replaced the roof with tile in 1786. The California Missions are known for their tile roofs. During the early days of the Missions, They were saved from starvation by 9000 lbs. of bear meat from the site, called "Canyon of the Bears."
