Our founder, Truett Cathy, made the decision to close on Sundays in 1946 when he opened his first restaurant in Hapeville, Georgia. Having worked seven days a week in restaurants open 24 hours, Truett saw the importance of closing on Sundays so that he and his employees could set aside one day to rest, enjoy time with their families and loved ones or worship if they choose - a practice we uphold today.

Inventing the Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich
Serving a breaded, boneless chicken breast between two buttered buns is a seemingly simple idea--but it was a novelty for its time. Truett Cathy experimented for years at the Dwarf Grill in Hapeville, GA when in 1964, he finally arrived at the perfect recipe. On that day, the Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich was born. That capital A is on purpose – it means "grade A top quality". Truett's Guests told him, "We like it, don't change it again." And we haven't.

The Cows
In 1995, a renegade cow, paintbrush in mouth, painted the three words "EAT MOR CHIKIN" on a Texas billboard. From that day forward, the burger-eating landscape was forever changed. These fearless cows, acting in enlightened self-interest, realized that when people eat chicken, they don't eat beef. Today, the cows' herds have increased and their message reaches millions - through television, radio, online, and on the occasional water tower. Chick-fil-A, Inc., Founder S. Truett Cathy died Sept. 8, 2014, at age 93. Cathy started the business in 1946, when he and his brother, Ben, opened an Atlanta diner known as The Dwarf Grill (later renamed The Dwarf House). Through the years, that restaurant prospered and led Cathy to further the success of his business. In 1967, Cathy founded and opened the first Chick-fil-A restaurant in Atlanta's Greenbriar Shopping Center. Today, Chick-fil-A has the highest same-store sales and is the largest quick-service chicken restaurant chain in the United States based on annual system-wide sales. Cathy's family has continued his tradition of leadership, including his son Dan, who was appointed as the company's CEO in 2013, and grandson Andrew, who serves as the current Chick-fil-A CEO.

Cathy was the author of six books and was a committed philanthropist dedicated to making a difference in the lives of youth. He was the recipient of countless awards over the years, both for his business acumen and for his charity. With his wife of 65 years, Jeannette McNeil Cathy, he led a life that was centered on biblical principles and family, and is survived by his sons Dan T. and Don "Bubba" Cathy; daughter Trudy Cathy White; 12 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

American fast food restaurant chain and the largest chain specializing in chicken sandwiches. Headquartered in College Park, Georgia, Chick-fil-A operates 3,059 restaurants across 48 states, as well as in the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The company also has operations in Canada. They have a breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu.

Chick-fil-A calls its specialty the "original chicken sandwich". It is a piece of deep-fried breaded boneless chicken breast served on a toasted bun with two slices of dill pickle, or with lettuce, tomato, and cheese.

The chain's origin can be traced to the Dwarf Grill (now the Dwarf House), a restaurant opened by S. Truett Cathy, the chain's former chairman and CEO, in Hapeville, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta, in 1946, which is near the location of the Ford Motor Company Atlanta Assembly Plant, for many years a source of many of the restaurant's patrons but later demolished.

In 1961, after 15 years in the fast-food business, Cathy found a pressure-fryer that could cook the chicken sandwich in the same time it took to cook a hamburger. Following this discovery, he registered the name Chick-fil-A, Inc. The company's trademarked slogan, "We Didn't Invent the Chicken, Just the Chicken Sandwich," refers to their flagship menu item, the Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich. Though Chick-Fil-A was the first national chain to make a fast, fried chicken sandwich its flagship item, it has been shown that Cathy's claim to have "invented the chicken sandwich" is false.

From 1964 to 1967, the sandwich was licensed to over fifty eateries, including Waffle House and the concession stands of the new Houston Astrodome. The Chick-Fil-A sandwich was withdrawn from sale at other restaurants when the first dedicated location opened in 1967, in the food court of the Greenbriar Mall in Atlanta.

During the 1970s and early 1980s, the chain expanded by opening new locations in suburban malls' food courts. The first freestanding location was opened April 16, 1986, on North Druid Hills Road in Atlanta, Georgia, and the company began to focus more on stand-alone units rather than food courts. Although it has expanded outward from its original geographic base, most new restaurants are located in Southern US suburban areas.

• Since 1997, the Atlanta-based company has sponsored the Peach Bowl, an annual college football bowl game played in Atlanta on New Year's Eve. Chick-fil-A also sponsors the Southeastern Conference and the Atlantic Coast Conference of college athletics.
• In 2008, Chick-fil-A was among the first fast-food restaurants to become completely free of trans fats.
• In February 2014, Chick-fil-A announced plans to serve chicken raised without antibiotics in its restaurants nationwide within five years, the first fast-food restaurant to make this commitment. This was implemented by May 2019.

With over 2,100 restaurants in 46 states and the District of Columbia, Chick-fil-A has grown to become one of the largest privately-held and family-owned restaurant chains in the U.S. The first Chick-fil-A restaurant opened in Atlanta's Greenbrier Mall in 1967, but Chick-fil-A's story begin 21 years earlier when founder S. Truett Cathy and his brother Ben opened the Dwarf Grill (later renamed the Dwarf House) in Hapeville.

The Cathy brothers decided to open a small, 24-hour diner across from the Ford Motor Company assembly plant and near the Atlanta airport. Location is always important in a new business, and this location came with a built-in customer base of Ford plant and airport workers. After Ben Cathy died in a tragic plan crash, Truett Cathy and his wife Jeanette continued to run the restaurant.

As the business grew, Cathy started experimenting with a new recipe for a boneless chicken sandwich. Remembering his mother's method of cooking fried chicken with a heavy top that trapped the heat and moisture, Cathy tried cooking boneless chicken breasts in a pressure cooker. The experiment was a success. He was able to cook a juicy piece of boneless chicken in a fraction of the time it would take to cook the chicken in a pan or on the grill.

For four years, Cathy experiment with different seasonings and breadings by asking his customers to taste the chicken and give feedback. In 1964 Cathy found the perfect mix of over 20 seasonings and completed his creation by placing the seasoned chicken breast on a toasted buttered bun with two pickles. Cathy's secret recipe is still unchanged and used every day at Chick-fil-A restaurants around the country.

The chicken sandwich became a very popular menu item at the Dwarf House-outselling hamburgers. Cathy knew he had something special and met with a trademark attorney in 1963. The attorney encouraged him to come up with a unique name, so he started thinking about what made his sandwich so good. The best cut of beef is a fillet and Cathy used top quality or grade A ingredients. He put those ideas together and the name came to him, Chick-fil-A.

At first, Cathy sold the Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich as a licensed product to other restaurants. A local poultry supplier provided the meat and Cathy provided the recipe. Cathy was successful in getting the sandwiches sold in stores, but it was difficult to ensure that the restaurants used the same methods and kept up the same high standards Cathy had established at the Dwarf House.

The first Chick-fil-A restaurant opened in November 1967 at the Greenbriar Shopping Center in Atlanta. The idea of having restaurants inside malls and shopping centers was pretty new. Cathy had to convince mall owners that having a restaurant would not create smoke in the mall or result in a lot of trash. Cathy selected Doris Williams, who was running a school cafeteria, to operate the restaurant. She became the first in Chick-fil-A franchisee Operator. Today, the Chick-fil-A business model still relies on its Operators to successfully run each individual Chick-fil-A restaurant.

Cathy practiced a slow growth model, opening more stores in malls without taking on a lot of debt. It was a much cheaper investment to open a small restaurant in a mall than to purchase land and build a free-standing restaurant. As mall development slowed in the 1980s, Chick-fil-A started building free-standing restaurants. The first free-standing Chick-fil-A store opened in Atlanta in 1986. In 1993, Chick-fil-A opened its first drive-thru-only restaurant in Greenville, SC. Today, there are restaurants in Los Angeles, New York City, and everywhere in between with new restaurants opening almost every week.

I've become a fan of Chick-fil-A. I was, for my entire life, in that decided minority of people who refuse to go to the place for political reasons. Oh, there's also the whole alleged Silly Putty chemical thing.

But recently, for the first time ever, I walked into a Chick-fil-A and ordered almost everything. I sat down to a feast that, I'll admit, my left-leaning proclivities hoped would be awful. But it was not. Even the salad was good. Damn it.

So then, with enough food to cover two trays, I set out to rank everything on the Chick-fil-A menu, from the best to the worst of what the fast-food restaurant serves. It was good enough that I might just go again. Here, then, are the best lunch-dinner offerings at Chick-fil-A, a restaurant that's hard to hate anymore.

   I know. This sounds like a joke, which was honestly the reason I ordered it. But this is a very good salad, and not just for fast food. The kale is fresh and tender, with cabbage adding a nice crunch. There's good texture from the toasted almonds that come on the side, and the apple cider vinaigrette is light, just a bit sweet and adds a nice sour tang to a rich meal. Connie, the host/busser at the Chick-fil-A, gave me a low-calorie, high-protein hack: order the Grilled Nuggets meal, get the kale on the side and mix them at the table, like you're a Chick-fil-A Bobby Flay.

Known for its chicken, of course, boasting only real breast meat free of fillers, steroids, hormones, antibiotics, and artificial preservatives. Chick-fil-A has garnered a cult following, and customers can get heated when debating the best entree on the menu.

Some fans swear by the spicy chicken sandwich, while others argue that the regular chicken sandwich is iconic for good reason. The chain releases its most popular entree item ordered each year, and in 2023, the classic chicken sandwich took the top spot for the second year running.

But just because it's the most popular doesn't mean it's the best thing on the menu. I decided to take one for the team-what a struggle!-and try every entree to determine which deserves the most praise. While there were no losers to be found, some were certainly better than others. Ultimately, the items that took top accolades were the most simple, beloved classics the chain is known for.

Chick-fil-A is a rapidly expanding fast-food chain known for its high quality, its exceptional level of customer service, and what it claims is the "original" chicken sandwich. But there is more to the Chick-fil-A menu than a piece of breaded chicken in a bun, even if you do decide to simply stick to poultry.

To help you out, we tried some of the most popular chicken items from Chick-fil-A and ranked them based on our experience. In this case, lower on the list doesn't necessarily mean "bad." Overall, we feel like it's impossible to make a bad choice, and, at worst, Chick-fil-A drops to the quality of standard fast food.

It is truly exceptional, and an item ranking lower down the list simply means it isn't as good as something else on the menu. So if you're looking for our take on tenders, our stance on spice, or our beliefs about breakfast, look no further. Here is our countdown of the best chicken-based items you can get from one of America's most popular chicken chains.

   Sometimes, a menu item just ticks all of the boxes. Chick-fil-A's nuggets are not just the best item on the chain's menu. There is a fair argument that these are the best chicken nuggets you can buy from any fast-food restaurant.

   The grilled chicken club sandwich is Chick-fil-A's take on the classic club - however, you can think of it as an upscaled version of the chain's regular grilled offering. The bun and filet carry over, and the only real difference is the addition of cheese and bacon. Although that may not seem like much is being added, we all know a cheese and bacon combo can make a world of difference to absolutely anything.
5. Cobb Salad
   While Chick-fil-A's sandwiches may be its most famous offering, its salads have an excellent reputation. During the course of our testing, we sampled the Cobb salad, which contains a wide variety of ingredients including greens, corn, boiled egg, and tomatoes. We went with the standard breaded chicken option when choosing our salad, though you are free to add spicy or grilled chicken to this menu item.
6. Spicy Deluxe
   The spicy deluxe is a regular spicy sandwich, with tomato and lettuce added. Despite not sounding like much, the toppings transform the "deluxe" version of this menu staple into a completely different eating experience - adding flavor, texture, and a welcome burst of freshness to the plain sandwich. As with other upscaled Chick-fil-A sandwiches, cheese is also added to the offering. In this case, we went with pepper jack as that seems to be the standard.

    Believe it or not, grilled nuggets are a lie. When we ordered them, we received what appeared to be a sliced-up grilled filet. However, this method makes sense when you think about it, and likely leads to a better nugget. Cooking a larger piece of meat will usually lead to better results. The end product will be juicier, and you can develop more of a sear without drying out the inside of the cut. So the grilled "nuggets" likely have a better texture than they would had they been formed or sliced before cooking. The end result is pretty good and constitutes one of the chain's many gluten-free options. The sear adds a great grilled flavor to the chicken, and many of the qualities of the original nuggets carry over.

    Given its Southern origins, a poor-quality biscuit would be a very bad look for Chick-fil-A. Fortunately, the Georgia-based chain has not let the side down. In terms of quality, the chicken is also what you would expect from Chick-fil-A. Delicious and perfectly cooked.

The visual identity of Chick-Fil-A is based on a laconic yet powerful color combination of red and black, which can make any lettering and images modern and strong. Though the brand's cool and friendly emblem is pretty strong on its own as is a brilliant example of how redesigns, held not that many times in the company's history, elevate the image without losing individuality and reflect the progress and growth of the brand.

1960 – 1963
The initial logo of the fast-food chain was introduced in 1960 and only stayed with the brand for three years, though it was a fun and brilliantly executed badge, composed of a black and red chicken's head in profile, placed on the left from the handwritten logotype. The chicken was looking to the right and was drawn in a caricatured manner, with a smiling face and cunning eyes.

1963 – 1964
The new logo preserved all the elements of the previous version. The chicken's head, though, was not as large and placed lower. The "Best Thing That Ever Happened to a Chicken" inscription in all capital bold letters at the bottom was gone. In addition, there were now two red hyphens, the phrase lost one "L", and the letter "A" was enlarged and colored red. The additional red elements created a well-balanced brand visual identity.

1964 – 1975
The redesign of 1970 brought Chick-Fil-A its iconic logo the whole world knows today. The new logo was recognizable thanks to the same color palette as well as the illustration of a chicken's head. The latter, though, was now a part of the inscription as the capital "C" was stylized as the chicken. The stylized letter "C" had a black open beak on its right, a small red eye inside, and four solid red ovals above it, making up a bird's profile. The inscription was no longer bold and had a more elegant handwriting style. The updates made the restaurant chain appear more sophisticated.

1975 – 1985
The previous logo version has undergone minimal changes. The black lettering was done using the same custom cursive typeface with rounded shapes and sleek lines that now got bold. The updated version was easier to see from afar and gave the logo a more grounded and confident appearance.

1985 – 1998
In 1985 the color palette of the logo was slightly changed colors by making the shade of red darker. This didn't affect the look of the emblem or its recognizability, just made it look more balanced and professional.

1998 – 2012
In 1998 the company starts drawing its logo in red and placing it on a white background. No black details are left on the emblem, and the new red and white palette looks powerful and passionate, representing the brand's love and warmth, it tends to give to its customers.

2012 – Today
The redesign of 2012 slightly refined the contours of the iconic logo, and closes the chicken's beak. The new emblem has its color brightened and lines modernized, and today it looks fresh, stylish and very modern, brilliantly reflecting the essence and purpose of the company.

The script glyphs featured on the Chick-fil-A logo were hand-drawn specifically for the restaurant chain. The casual lines create a relaxed, laid-back mood.

Chick-fil-A Founder S. Truett Cathy opened the Dwarf Grill (later renamed the Dwarf House) at this site on May 23, 1946.
