The Los Angeles Almanac has been a unique online reference devoted to providing statistical and narrative information about the people, places and stories that make up the incredible panorama of Los Angeles County. We are not only the first comprehensive almanac for Los Angeles County*, but also the first (and as yet only) online almanac focusing exclusively on any major metropolitan area in the world.We are referenced extensively across a wide variety of websites and online publications
In 1998
Los Angeles Almanac launched online in 1998 as LosAngelesAlmanac.com (renamed LAAlmanac.com in 2005). In September 2000, we were listed at the top of Los Angeles Magazine’s Short List of Essential L.A. Web Sites (and we sheepishly admit, as pointed out, that, at the time, the "look of the site [was] shamelessly lifted from Yahoo").In 2001
We published a print version of the Los Angeles Almanac that was first stocked by Vroman's Bookstore in Pasadena and Dutton's Brentwood Bookstore (a wonderful independent bookseller that sadly closed in 2008). This, to date, has been our only print edition.In 2008
We published our first wall map of the City of Los Angeles outlining its many neighborhoods. As far as we can determine, this was the first wall map of City of Los Angeles neighborhoods published (a year later, the Los Angeles Times put out their own version, but only online). Since then, we've published several editions and added a wall map showing City of Los Angeles zip codes and a wall map of the entire County of Los Angeles. We are not currently publishing any map editions as we work to make updates.In 2018
We continue to add new pages, illustrations, photos, maps and video links to our website. In 2018, we acquired a collection of more than 500 vintage postcards about Los Angeles County and Southern California. We now have these permanently exhibited online at Greetings From Los Angeles - Vintage Postcard Views of Los Angeles County.*
We emphasize "comprehensive almanac" because the Los Angeles County Republican Party once published the Los Angeles County Almanac (published 1961?-1998). That annual publication focused, however, on government and politics in Los Angeles County. The Los Angeles Almanac, by contrast, covers almost all topics commonly addressed by general-interest almanacs.
